Bend motel shooting update: 2nd man stabbed, 2 jailed

KTVZ

After days spent piecing together what led to the shooting of a man at a southeast Bend motel, police detectives said Friday night another man was stabbed several times, sending both to the hospital and two men to jail on robbery, heroin possession and other charges.

Officers were called around 9:15 Tuesday night to Room 147 at the Rodeway Inn and Suites at 904 Southeast Third Street on a reported shooting, said Lt. Clint Burleigh.

Detectives now say that Bend residents Vincent Torres, 23, and Nathan Alvis, 24, were staying in the room when two other men, Justin James Perkins, 23, also of Bend, and Steven Tyler Premo, 35, of Encinitas, California, contacted them.

Burleigh said the two visitors displayed a gun and an electronic stun gun, similar to a Taser and demanded property from the two motel guests. Police did not disclose the nature of the items due to the ongoing investigation.

During that initial encounter, the handgun went off, but no one was injured, Burleigh said.

Premo and Perkins left the room with the demanded property. But as they got into their car, a 2016 Toyota Yaris, another dispute began between the four men, during which Premo was stabbed several times, police said, while Torris was shot in the leg, a non-life-threatening injury.

Police said Premo and Perkins left in the car, while Torres called for help and was taken by Bend Fire medics to St. Charles Bend.

Bend police had previous contact with that car, earlier in the day, Burleigh said, so officers were able to determine a general area where the two men might be.

Several hours later, early Wednesday morning, patrols officers saw Premo and Perkins get into a taxi and staged a high-risk (guns drawn) traffic stop near Northeast Neff Road and Purcell Boulevard, taking the two men into custody.

Officers also learned then that Premo had been injured in the earlier dispute and took him to the Bend hospital, where he was admitted.

Perkins was interviewed and taken to the Deschutes County Jail, where he was lodged on two counts of first-degree robbery, unlawful use of a weapon, heroin possession and menacing, Burleigh said.

Detectives served several search warrants in the investigation, including one to search the interior of the Toyota Yaris.

Police contacted Premo on Thursday and Friday. Burleigh said he was moved at some point to St. Charles Redmond, where he was taken into custody upon release Friday. He was lodged at the Bend jail on the same charges as Perkins. Both men were held on $240,000 bail.

Burleigh said in a news release that it remains “unclear the relationship between the four people involved in this incident.” He told NewsChannel he did not have details on the stabbing injuries but was told Premo was “
