Bend man re-arrested, accused of abusing two more girls

A 42-year-old Bend man arrested last week on charges of sexually explicit interactions with a Florida girl on a smartphone app was arrested again Thursday, accused of similar actions with two Willamette Valley girls, one of whom he traveled to Salem to have sex with.

Joel Matthew Hoffman was contacted again around 3:15 p.m. and arrested at a home in Redmond where he was staying, said Bend Police Sgt. Devin Lewis.

He was taken to the Deschutes County Jail and booked on three counts each of using a child of sexually explicit conduct and first-degree online sexual corruption of a child, and two counts of luring a minor for sexual conduct. His bail totals $130,000, according to jail records.

Lewis said Bend detectives have continued their investigation since Hoffman;’s initial arrest on June 8, accused of engaging in sexually explicit conversations and sharing explicit photos with a Florida girl, offering to buy her a bus ticket to Oregon through use of a smartphone app called FriendLife.

Salem and Sandy police helped in the continued investigation, which Lewis said revealed that Hoffman engaged in explicit conversations with at least two more female juveniles, residents of Salem and Boring, exchanging photographs of their genitals and of sexual acts.

Lewis said they also learned Hoffman traveled to Salem on two occasions to meet one of the girls and have sexual intercourse with her. Hoffman also had made arrangements to travel to Sandy soon to meet and have sex with the other girl, the sergeant said.

Lewis also noted that none of the newly charged crimes allegedly occurred since his initial arrest.

The investigation continues, Lewis said, and more charges against Hoffman are possible. Anyone with information about Hoffman and similar behavior was asked to contact Detective Wes Murphy at 541-693-6911.
