Madras fight, stabbing leads to man’s arrest

One long-time Madras transient stabbed another in the leg during a fight Tuesday afternoon, sending the victim to the hospital for treatment, police said. The suspect was arrested a few hours later.

Madras police, Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies and Oregon State Police responded around 4:30 p.m. to the report of a fight between two men just outside a home in the 300 block of Northeast 10 th Street, said Madras Police Detective Sgt. Steve Webb. The reporting party said one man had stabbed the other.

Jefferson County Emergency Medical Services arrived to evaluate the victim’s injuries, including a knife wound to the leg, Webb said. The 61-year-old victim was taken to St. Charles Madras for treatment of a non-life threatening injury, then released.

An investigation identified the suspect as Frank Jabir Reese, 64, who police located shortly after 7 p.m. riding a bicycle on D Street near Second Street in Madras, Webb said. He was arrested and taken to the Jefferson County Jail.

Reese was being held on $200,000 bail on charges of first- and second-degree assault, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon, menacing, second-degree disorderly conduct and harassment, pending his first court appearance at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Webb said he had no information on the cause of the fight or whether alcohol or drugs were involved. But he said the two men knew each other and were long-time residents and “part of the transient population.”
