Earthquakes shake Indonesia, Philippines; no tsunami threat
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Strong, shallow underwater earthquakes have shaken western Indonesia and the Philippine capital region. No serious damage was reported and there was no tsunami threat. The magnitude-6.7 quake in Indonesia was felt in many parts of Sumatra island before dawn Monday. The Philippine quake was 6.4 magnitude and shook parts of the Manila region and outlying provinces at dawn. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the offshore quake was set off by movement along the Manila Trench and its epicenter was south of Manila. Indonesia and the Philippines lie along the Pacific “Ring of Fire” and are frequently struck by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
