Police ID Bend woman struck by SUV, critically injured

Police on Thursday identified a 62-year-old Bend woman who was struck and critically injured on Mt. Washington Drive Wednesday night, Bend’s second serious car-pedestrian crash in less than a day.

Carolyn Stanfill was reported to be in critical condition Thursday afternoon at St. Charles Bend, where she was rushed after the crash, reported at 8:22 p.m. on Northwest Mt. Washington Drive near Rippling River Court, near the entrance to the Riverhouse Convention Center.

The crash closed Mt. Washington Drive as lights were erected and a crash reconstruction team was brought in.

A dark-colored SUV, driven by a 33-year-old Bend woman, was heading west on Mt. Washington when it struck Stanfill, who was crossing the street from south to north, Bend Police Lt. Brian Kindel told NewsChannel 21 live at the scene. The driver is cooperating with the ongoing investigation, police said.

Bend Fire medics took her to St. Charles Bend with life-threatening injuries, he added. Police confirmed Thursday morning Stanfill remained in the hospital’s intensive care unit with several life-threatening injuries.

Kindel said some investigators went to the hospital while others conducted the on-scene investigation. He told Audrey Roberts there were similarities with the fatal crash on the north end of town earlier in the day – it was dark, there was limited lighting and a driver’s headlights might not light up a person approaching from the side.

Sgt. Ron Taylor said there is an underground tunnel to cross the road between the convention center and hotel, and no marked crosswalk near the center’s entrance.

A boot and coat were among items on the street near the damaged vehicle involved in the crash.

Police closed Mt. Washington Drive from the Third Street intersection west past The Riverhouse to Awbrey Road. Bend Streets Department crews assisted with the road closures, as Mt. Washington Drive was closed for several hours. The vehicle had been towed away for inspection by 11 p.m., and Taylor said the road was likely to reopen by about midnight.

Early Wednesday morning, a 60-year-old Bend transient, Richard Kurner, was struck and killed by an SUV while crossing busy Highway 97 at Grandview Drive on Bend’s north end.
