Salem to buy building on State Hospital campus
SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The city of Salem is buying a historic building on the Oregon State Hospital campus, and hopes to transform it into affordable housing.
The Statesman Journal reports (https://is.gd/63bJou ) the city is buying Yaquina Hall from the state for about $523,000. The Salem Housing Authority plans to apply for $750,000 in federal community development block grant money to help fund renovations.
The goal is to create 50 affordable units for low and moderate income seniors, disabled people and families. Rents would be about $600 a month.
Yaquina Hall was built in 1947. It housed nurses before turning into office space.
