Friday school closures include JeffCo 509-J, Culver

School and event closures, cancellations and delays piled up Thursday along with the snow and threat of freezing rain or sleet on the High Desert — and Friday;s closures included Jefferson County School District 509-J and Culver schools.

Powell Butte Community Charter School: Classes on a two-hour delay Friday morning

Central Christian School in Redmond: Closed Friday

Sisters Christian Academy: Closed Friday

The Central Oregon Council on Aging in Bend will open two hours late Friday.

Volunteers in Medicine Clinic in Bend was closed Friday.

Also, the Madras Holiday Market scheduled for Friday and Saturday has been rescheduled for next weekend, Dec. 16-17 at the Madras Fairgrounds.

Bend-La Pine Schools canceled after-school activities and sent notice that middle school and high school students will be released 15 minutes earlier, allowing bus and student drivers added time to slow down and drive due to the winter road conditions. Parents of bus riders were advised to plan for delays, as congested roads and slow travel are expected.

NeighborImpact said all afternoon HeadStart classes were canceled, as were all Bend-La Pine High Desert Museum Family Night programs and Redmond-Prineville Family Nights.

Classes and operations at OSU-Cascades after 5:15 p.m. Thursday were canceled, officials said. All facilities, including Tykeson Hall, the Graduate & Research Center, and the Annex, were closing at that time.

The storm hit on a day finals were underway at COCC in Bend, where officials said two finals scheduled for 1 p.m. had changed locations.

Redmond schools continued regular operations Thursday and said parents were welcome to pick up students at any time, but canceled all after-school activities and events due to the forecast conditions.

They said they were working with ODOT and police on a plan for Friday and will announce those plans to families as soon as decisions are made, through the automated phone system, Website and social media.

The Sisters School District also canceled all after-school events and practices Thursday.

Crook County School District announced all after-school and evening school activities and sports events/practices, including a drama performance, were canceled Thursday night, and all school buildings will be closed after students are released.

All Jefferson County 509J after-school activities were canceled. Officials said school would let out at the regular time, but all practices, contests and concerts were canceled. The Culver School District also canceled Thursday evening activities.

The six Deschutes Public Libraries were closing early Thursday due to the weather: Downtown Bend: 5:00 p.m.; East Bend: 5:00 p.m.; Redmond: 5:00 p.m.; La Pine: 4:00 p.m.; Sisters: 4:00 p.m.; Sunriver: 4:00 p.m.

The Crook County Library was closing at 4 p.m. Thursday and all evening library programs were canceled, including the Santa & the Grinch program.

Oregon Child Development Coalition in Madras and Culver was closing at noon Thursday and announced they will be closed Friday as well.

Family Resource Center’s Focus on Parenting series scheduled to begin Thursday evening was canceled.

The BEAT Children’s Theatre canceled its 7 p.m. Thursday performance of “Elf the Musical’: all other performances are on schedule.

The prospect of freezing rain also prompted Bend Fire and Rescue to cancel Thursday’s last night of the Santa Express, in the Skyliner Summit and NW Crossing neighborhoods. Donations can still be taken through next week to any Bend fire station as well as area Starbucks, Firkus Plumbing, Trac Towing and the Bend Pappy’s Pizza.

American Legion Ray Johnson Post 44 in Redmond canceled all Thursday night meetings and Friday night bingo. Sunday bingo is uncertain at this point, they said.

REACH (formerly Boys & Girls Clubs of Redmond) has canceled after-school programs Thursday. REACH will not provide after=school transportation. Parents should plan to pick up students at school. Parents are being notified as quickly as possible. Call 541-504-9060 for questions.

Redmond Area Parks and Rec: Due to Thursday’s snowfall the Cascade Swim Center and the RAPRD Activity Center closed at noon. All afternoon and evening programming for Thursday and early-morning programming for Friday were canceled.

The Cascade Swim Center and Activity Center expect to reopen at 9 a.m. Friday.

Also, all afternoon and evening RAPRD programs held at Redmond School District facilities were canceled Thursday. This includes Adventure Quest and Basketball.

The Deschutes Democrats canceled their Thursday night meeting, hoping to reschedule next week.
