Bend man arrested in Market of Choice robbery
A 30-year-old Bend man has been arrested on robbery and theft charges, accused of shoplifting from the Market of Choice on Wednesday night, then brandishing a knife when confronted by security, police said. A big clue came with the ID found in a nearby parked car.
Police responded shortly before 9 p.m. to the reported robbery at the new market at 115 SW Sisemore Street, said Lt. Clint Burleigh.
The initial report was that a man took items from the business and brandished a knife when contacted by security, Burleigh said. The suspect had run before officers arrived, but dropped the knife as he fled, the lieutenant said.
Officers were able to obtain a clear photo of the suspect, including a very distinct clothing description, Burleigh said. An officer recognized the man in the photo and clothing description from a contact several days earlier with Derek Eugene Chamberlain.
Officers searching the area found a car parked just north of the market, its headlights left on. Officers spotted an ID card in the car with Chamberlains information on it, Burleigh said.
Police went to his address and found him outside, wearing clothes shown in the surveillance video, and he was taken into custody without incident.
Chamberlain was booked into the Deschutes County Jail on charges of second-degree robbery, third-degree theft, menacing and unlawful use of a weapon. He was arraigned Thursday and remained held on $100,000 bail, pending formal indictment, authorities said.
