Bend man arrested after stop-and-go police chase

A 31-year-old Bend man who refused to pull over for police late Sunday night led officers on a stop-and-go pursuit on several northeast Bend streets before he was arrested on DUII and other charges in a guns-drawn traffic stop.

Shortly before midnight, a Bend officer spotted a dark Toyota 4-Runner heading east on Franklin Avenue near Second Street at about 40 to 45 mph in a posted 25 mph zone, said Sgt. Eric Hagan.

The officer observed other driving violations as the SUV turned south onto Third Street, Hagan said. The driver, identified as Michael Lynn Anderson, made a quick right turn onto Emerson Avenue and turned off the headlights while continuing to drive.

The officer turned on his overhead lights to make a traffic stop, but Anderson instead sped into the Walgreens parking lot, Hagan said. He continued out of the parking lot, heading north on Second Street, then coming to a stop. But when a second officer arrived on scene, Anderson sped off again, Hogan said.

The lieutenant said Anderson drove east on Franklin Avenue and ran a red light at Third Street, stopping his car again on Franklin Avenue near Fourth Street.

At that point, officers conducted a high-risk traffic stop and Anderson was taken into custody without further incident, Hagan said.

An investigation determined that Anderson was driving with a blood-alcohol content of .15, nearly twice the legal limit of .08, Hagan said.

Anderson was lodged at the Deschutes County jail on charges of DUII, felony fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, criminal driving with a suspended/revoked license, reckless driving and failure to install an ignition interlock device.

A jail officer said Anderson spent less than two hours in jail before he was released to a responsible third party.
