Explosions in Moldovan region near Ukraine spark war worries

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Police in the Moldovan separatist region of Trans-Dniester say two explosions close to the Ukrainian border knocked out a pair of powerful antennas used for broadcasting Russian radio shows. They said the incident occurred on Tuesday morning. On Monday, several explosions hit the state security ministry in the breakaway region’s capital. Trans-Dniester is a strip of land between Moldova and Ukraine that has been under the control of separatist authorities since a 1992 war. Russia bases about 1,500 troops there as peacekeepers. Ukrainian officials have expressed concern about those soldiers entering their country. The threat of renewed fighting over Trans-Dniester triggering a broader conflict worries Moldovan authorities.
