Guatemala reappoints criticized attorney general to 2nd term

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — Guatemala’s president has reappointed to a second term his attorney general, who the U.S. government says is involved “in significant corruption.” The move Monday disappointed many Guatemalans and foreign governments critical of Attorney General Consuelo Porras for backsliding on corruption investigations. President Alejandro Giammattei says Porras deserves another four years leading the office. Earlier Monday, Porras defended her record during her annual report. She said that under her leadership the office had enforced the country’s laws and sought justice for all without exceptions. The U.S. State Department said later that Porras has repeatedly obstructed and undermined anticorruption investigations in Guatemala to protect her political allies and gain undue political favor.”
