Bend DUII driving suspect arrested after brief chase

KTVZ

A Bend police officer’s attempt to stop a pickup truck without taillights turned into a brief pursuit Thursday night and ended on a dead-end street with the arrest of a 46-year-old man on several charges.

Around 10:35 p.m., an officer tried to pull over a white 1994 Chevy pickup due to the lack of taillights and other violations while entering the Bend Parkway northbound from Colorado Avenue, said Lt. Clint Burleigh.

The driver initially stopped, but sped off when the officer approached the pickup, Burleigh said. The resulting pursuit was quickly terminated as the driver, later identified as Jonathan Michael Wallace of Bend, sped away at over 80 mph, Burleigh said.

Bend police and Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies continued in that direction at normal speeds and saw the pickup turn onto Nels Anderson Road, then Nels Anderson place, which is a dead-end street.

The pickup was found parked in the lot of a roofing business and Wallace was taken into custody without incident, the lieutenant said

Wallace was found to be driving under the influence of intoxicants and with a felony suspended license, Burleigh said. He was taken to the county jail and booked on those charges, as well as attempt to elude a police officer.

The second DUII arrest in Bend in several hours prompted Burleigh to repeat this message:

“As we move into the late spring and summer, we generally see an increased use of marijuana and alcohol. This is a reminder to the community and visitors alike that if you consume alcohol or marijuana please be responsible in your decisions, especially the decision to operate a motor vehicle.”
