Credit union awards four C. Oregon scholarships

SELCO Community Credit Union has awarded $30,000 in college scholarships to 20 graduating high school seniors throughout Oregon, including four students from Central Oregon.

The $1,500 scholarships provide assistance for college-related expenses and support the Oregon financial institution’s mission of helping member-owners reach their goals.

Scholarship recipients were chosen from hundreds of applicants from all 26 Oregon counties that SELCO serves. Winners were selected based on criteria that include both academic performance and community involvement.

“While we’re open to everyone in the community today , SELCO was founded more than 90 years ago by a group of teachers and school employees, so naturally our commitment to supporting education is strong,” said Laura Illig, SELCO’s vice president of marketing. “Education is about the pursuit of dreams and fulfillment of goals, and SELCO takes pride in helping our members and their families realize their full potential.”

To qualify, recipients must be graduating from a four-year accredited high school, have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5, and plan to attend a two- or four-year college or university. Applicants were asked to submit letters of recommendation and a personal essay describing their goals for continuing their education.

Central Oregon’s 2017 SELCO Scholarship recipients:

· Jackson Smith – Ridgeview High School, Redmond

· Jared Saxton – Ridgeview High School, Redmond

· Bradi Wood – Redmond High School, Redmond

· Jennifer McCallister – Crook County High School, Prineville
