Storm damage cleanup underway in Bend

There were high winds and high temperatures this past weekend, which made for the perfect environment for trees to come crashing down.

In Pine Nursery Park, a tree toppled down just moments after a softball tournament had been called off due to lightning in the area Sunday evening.

A set of bleachers and a backstop were hit by the falling tree. The Bend Park and Recreation District hopes to get those structures fixed in the next few weeks.

A 50 foot-tall tree in downtown Bend came down as well and hit the stairs to the entrance of the Bend La Pine School District Education Center.

With high winds and lightning strikes, it is important to be mindful of tall trees around you at all times.

The Bend Park and Rec District wants to keep safety as its top priority this summer.

The district has placed staff at parks to warn people if a storm is coming, to keep them out of harm’s way.

Hollinshead Park also was shut down late Sunday due to four fallen trees.

The park reopened Monday, but as of Monday evening the parking lot at the park was still closed as crews work to clear the debris.

More thunderstorms hit parts of Central Oregon on Monday afternoon, including marble-sized hail in the Redmond area.
