GENEVA (AP) — The U.N. human rights chief Michelle Bachelet says she will not seek a new four-year term after the current one expires on Aug. 31, citing personal reasons. She said her decision, which she told U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres two months ago, had “no relationship” to recent criticism of her response to China’s treatment of Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in western Xinjiang. The 70-year-old said she “wants to go back to my country and my family.” Guterres expressed support for Bachelet after the United States and some top rights groups criticized her six-day trip to China last month. She said her office would issue a long-awaited report on Xinjiang before she leaves office.
