A 61-year-old Florence man was killed Friday in the crash of his motorcycle on U.S. Highway 20 in Harney County, Oregon State Police reported.

OSP troopers and other first-responders were called to the crash shortly before noon near milepost 163, about 30 miles east of Burns, said OSP Sgt. Jeff Proulx.

A preliminary investigation found that Dan Barnum was riding a 2017 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, heading west at about 70 mph (the speed limit is 65 mph) when for an unknown reason, he drifted onto the shoulder and lost control in the gravel, Proulx said.

Life-saving efforts were attempted, but Barnum, who was alone on the motorcycle, was pronounced dead at the crash scene.

OSP was assisted by the Harney County Sheriff’s Office and Harney District Ambulance.
