S. Oregon landowners concerned by proposed pumice mine

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – Some Southern Oregon landowners say a proposed pumice mine could increase truck traffic, bring noise and affect deer and elk habitats in a high-use recreation area.
 
The Mail Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/2wiD0kq ) the proposed pumice sand mining operation would be located along a scenic highway between Prospect and Union Creek in southwest Oregon, and in the middle of federal forests.
 
Land-use consultant Matt Ropp, who works for the landowner, says measures have been taken to reduce the effects the excavation could have. According to Ropp, the operation has agreed confine the excavation work to a five-month period after hearing concerns over habitat disruption.
 
A nearby landowner has submitted an appeal to Jackson County, who has not approved the project. A land-use watchdog organization is also following the project.
