Roof replacement to close Lava Lands Visitor Center

The Deschutes National Forest will be closing Lava Lands Visitor Center on the Newberry National Volcanic Monument for the season on Monday, Sept. 11 .

Lava Lands Visitor Center will close on Monday, September 11 to facilitate the removal and replacement of the Visitor Center roof before snowfall. The Visitor Center is set to reopen in May.

Lava Butte will remain open to motor vehicles through September, and will close for the season Sunday, October 1 . Lava River Cave will remain open until it closes for the season on Monday, October 2 . Accommodations will also be made for school groups visiting during September.

Valid recreation passes are required at all Newberry National Volcanic Monument sites and the Lava Lands Welcome Station at the entrance will be open from 10-4 daily in September to facilitate the time permit system for access to the limited parking on top of Lava Butte.
