Bend Park and Rec cancels activities due to smoke

KTVZ

The Bend Park and Recreation District announced Wednesday it has canceled some programs and activities due to poor air quality caused by wildfire smoke.

Information about changes is at: http://www.bendparksandrec.org/about_us/air-quality-and-smoke-updates/ .

The district canceled its youth sports programs, adult pickleball, tennis and softball programs, and closed the outdoor pool at Juniper Swim & Fitness Center. Some cancellations are for the day and others are for the rest of the week. Details are on the webpage .

River recreation is also impacted by air quality, officials said. A Bend Paddle Trail Alliance event at the Bend Whitewater Park was canceled Wednesday and rental concessions at Riverbend Park were closed.

“We will monitor the air quality data provided by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality Air Quality Index for decisions about when to resume outdoor activities,” the park district announcement stated.

Many late-summer sporting events and practices for fall sports also are being affected by the unhealthy smoke levels. NewsChannel 21’s Lauren Melink will have more details on Fox at 4 and KTVZ at 5 and 6.
