Inmate fifth to die unexpectedly in Oregon prison this year

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A 23-year-old inmate at the Two Rivers Correctional Institution died suddenly, becoming the fifth unanticipated death at the state prison this year.
 
Oregon Department of Corrections spokeswoman Betty Bernt says staff members were responding to complaints from Kenneth Allen Sunday at the Umatilla facility when he became unresponsive.
 
The Oregonian/OregonLive reports (https://goo.gl/7iak6s ) emergency medical personnel arrived around 11 a.m., but were unable to save the man.
 
Officials say Allen, of White City, entered state custody in January 2016 on three counts of theft and one count of heroin possession in Jackson County. His expected release date was Dec. 22.
 
Bernt says officials could not immediately provide additional details.
 
The Oregon State Police Criminal Investigation Division will conduct an investigation, which is standard.
 
Officials say the four other inmates who have died unexpectedly this year were over 50 and found unresponsive in their cells.
