Redmond man injured in rollover crash east of Bend

A Redmond man was injured Monday morning when a car turned in front of his pickup at a three-way intersection east of Bend and he swerved to avoid it, causing the truck to roll onto its side, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said.

Deputies and Bend police and fire medics responded to the single-vehicle rollover crash with reported driver entrapment shortly before 10 a.m. at the three-way intersection of Butler Market and Hamby roads, said sheriff’s Sergeant William Bailey,

Investigators said Cody R. Bean, 20, of Redmond, was driving a 2000 black Ford Ranger pickup that was heading south on Butler Market Road, approaching the Hamby Road intersection.

The other vehicle, described by witnesses as a dark-colored passenger car, was stopped on Hamby Road facing north and preparing to turn west onto Butler Market Road.

The three-way intersection is controlled with stop signs at Hamby Road facing north and Butler Market Road facing east, Bailey noted. Southbound Butler Market Road is not controlled and has the right of way at the intersection.

Witnesses said the car failed to yield the right of way and turned into the path of Bean’s southbound pickup. Bean swerved to avoid the collision but lost control of his pickup and it rolled onto the road shoulder, Bailey said.

Firefighters pulled off the pickup’s roof in order to remove Bean, who was taken to St. Charles Bend for treatment of his injuries. A house supervisor said he was treated and released Monday afternoon.

The dark-colored passenger car left the scene, Bailey said. The crash investigation closed the intersection for about an hour, he added.

The sheriff’s office asked anyone with information about the second vehicle or who witnessed the crash and hasn’t been interviewed to call the non-emergency dispatch number at 541-693-6911 and ask to speak to a deputy, referencing case No. 17-359048.
