Bend man cited in Redmond school bus rear-end crash

A Bend man was cited for following too close Thursday morning after his pickup rear-ended a school bus south of Redmond that was stopped and waiting to turn left, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said.

Three Tumalo Community students, driver Stephen Eby of Redmond and another adult were on the bus at the time of the crash, which occurred just after 8 a.m. at Southwest Canal Boulevard and McVey Avenue, sheriff’s Sgt. William Bailey said.

One student was taken by ambulance to St. Charles Redmond for evaluation of minor injuries. He later rejoined his classmates at school, said Redmond School District spokesman Rainier Butler.

Redmond Fire medics and Oregon State Police also responded to the crash scene.

An investigation determined that the 2017 Bluebird school bus owned by the school district was stopped and facing north on Canal Boulevard, signaling to turn left (west) on McVey Avenue while waiting for oncoming traffic to clear, Bailey said.

A white Ford Ranger pickup Clarence Rosebrook, 63, of Bend, was driving northbound and he didn’t notice the stopped school bus, the sergeant said. Evidence indicated Rosebrook tried to avoid striking the bus, but hit the right rear corner.

Rosebrook as unhurt in the crash, but the pickup sustained heavy front-end damage and he was pinned inside for about 25 minutes until Redmond Fire crews were able to cut away the wreckage and remove him.

Rosebrook was cited at the scene for following too closely, a traffic violation. Bailey said it’s not believed intoxication or distracted driving contributed to the collision.

A truck rear-ended a school bus at an intersection south of Redmond Thursday morning and one student was taken to St. Charles Redmond to be checked out, officials said.
