Prineville teen seriously hurt in Lone Pine Rd. crash

A 16-year-old Prineville girl was seriously injured Saturday afternoon when she lost control of her car and it collided with an oncoming pickup truck on Northwest Lone Pine Road, east of Terrebonne and about 20 miles northwest of Prineville, Crook County sheriff’s deputies said Monday.

Deputies and Redmond Fire and Rescue personnel were dispatched around 1:45 p.m. to the crash in the 5600 block of Lone Pine Road, said sheriff’s Deputy Jake Childers.

Deputies arrived to find Redmond Fire workers using extrication tools to remove the teen from a badly damaged Honda, Childers said.

Evidence at the scene indicated the teen, who was alone in the car, was heading south on the road and the car veered right while entering a curve, crossing onto the shoulder, covered in loose cinder rock.

Childers said she then over-corrected, causing the car to veer left, rotate and cross sharply into the oncoming lane. The rear of her car then collided with the front of a northbound pickup whose driver was unable to avoid the crash.

The teen was taken by Life Flight helicopter to St. Charles Bend with serious injuries, deputies said. The pickup driver was unhurt.

Crook County Fire & Rescue also assisted at the scene with a mutual-aid ambulance, according to Redmond Fire Marshal Traci Cooper.

Childers said the sheriff’s office wants to remind drivers to be cautious and slow down. Due to varying winter weather, many roads remain icy in shaded areas, while others are covered with loose cinder rocks that remain after the ice has melted.

“These situations require that all drivers proceed with due care and remain attentive and alert while operating motor vehicles,” Childers wrote in a news release.
