Estate of woman killed crossing Portland freeway sues for $2M

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The estate of a woman who was fatally struck while trying to cross a freeway to a Portland homeless camp seeks $2 million in a lawsuit against the driver.

The driver was convicted of hit-and-run driving and driving while under the influence of intoxicants in the August 2016 death of Savannah Munden. The Oregonian/OregonLive reports prosecutors didn’t pursue homicide charges after deciding there wasn’t evidence that a sober motorist could have avoided the woman in the nighttime crash on U.S. 26.

Investigators also weren’t able to determine whether the impact of the drunk driver’s car killed Munden or if it was the impact from a second vehicle.

Munden’s fiance suffered injuries in the crash and filed a separate $2.5 million lawsuit.

Both suits were filed in Multnomah County Circuit Court.
