Mexican driver jailed, 36 lbs. of meth found E. of Bend

Oregon State Police stopped a 28-year-old man from Mexico was stopped for speeding Monday evening on Highway 20 east of Bend and an OSP dog found more than 36 pounds of methamphetamine in his car, troopers reported Friday.

Michel Alberto Fuentes Burgos of Sonora, Mexico, was taken to the Deschutes County Jail on meth possession, delivery and manufacture charges and remained held Friday on $1 million bail, jail records showed.

Troopers stopped Burgos’ Mexican-plated 2018 Nissan Versa around 7 p.m. Monday near milepost 18 east of Bend on a speeding violation, going 73 mph in an area with a 65 mph speed limit, OSP Lt. Cari Boyd said.

During the traffic stop, OSP K-9 Marley, with Senior Trooper Gary Martin, alerted and a search was conducted that turned up the wrapped package of methamphetamine, which the agency estimated at a value of $126,000.

An investigation determined the car had been stolen last month in Sonora, Mexico, Boyd said, adding that other charges will be forwarded to the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office for consideration.
