Oregon State Police on Saturday identified two people who were killed and five injured in a three-vehicle crash Friday afternoon on U.S. Highway 26 northwest of Portland.

Troopers responded around 4:45 p.m. to the reported crash near milepost 32 in Tillamook County, about 35 miles east of Seaside, OSP Lt. Cari Boyd said.

A preliminary investigation determined Caitlyn Potter, 18, of Portland, was heading east at the wheel of a black 2002 Chevy Trailblazer when she lost control, sliding sideways into the westbound lane, Boyd said.

Potter’s SUV first struck an oncoming Toyota Tacoma pickup, in which no one was hurt, then a westbound 2017 GMC Acadia in T-bone fashion, the trooper said.

The front passenger in the Trailblazer, Kendra Cornwell, 19, of Gresham, and the front passenger in the GMC, Tom Bonneville, 80, of Windom, Minnesota, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The GMC’s driver, Andrew Bonneville, 47, of Newberg, and three other GMC passengers were taken to Portland-area hospitals. Julia Bonneville, 77, also of Windom, Minnesota, who was flown to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center with serious injuries. The driver’s two daughters, 8 and 12, also went to the hospital with minor injuries.

Potter was taken to OHSU with critical injuries.

Boyd said speed and seat belt use were being considered as possible contributing factors in the crash, which closed or restricted the highway for five hours.
