Bend teen restrained, arrested in stabbing

A 17-year-old Bend resident who reportedly had used the drug MDMA or ecstasy was arrested in a McDonald’s drive-thru on charges of stabbing a 14-year-old acquaintance in the leg, but not without a struggle that led to his being placed in a restraining device, officers said Tuesday.

Around 8 p.m. Sunday, Deschutes County 911 received a report of a 14-year-old girl who went into the McDonald’s on Northeast Third Street to report she had been stabbed in the leg, Lt. Clint Burleigh said.

Police arrived and found a male in the drive-thru with a knife in his hands and “acting very erratically,” Burleigh said in a news release.

Officers immediately contacted the 17-year-old boy and initially were able to de-escalate the situation, convincing him to drop the knife, according to Burleigh.

But as the teen was being restrained by officers, he stopped listening to their commands and started to fight him. Officers were able to get control of the teen and place him in the WRAP restraining device.

Bend Fire and Rescue responded to help officers and took the teen to St. Charles Bend. He later was taken to the Deschutes County Juvenile Department and lodged on charges of second-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon and resisting arrest.

Officers learned the stabbing occurred in front of News and Smokes on Northeast Third Street. The alleged victim was found to have a non-life-threatening injury to her leg and also was taken to the hospital by Bend Fire medics.

Investigating officers learned the 17-year-old had used “Molly,” street slang for the drug MDMA or ecstasy, Burleigh said.

The lieutenant said the WRAP restraining device “has been instrumental in preventing injuries to both officers and offenders since we deployed it in 2015.”

“This piece of equipment is used weekly as we are dealing with highlight volatile people in our community,” Burleigh added. More information about the WRAP, including a video with Bend police demonstrating its use, can be found at http://saferestraints.com/news-media/
