Father of Army vet shot at White City VA clinic feels betrayed

KTVZ

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The father of a U.S. Army veteran shot by a guard during a violent confrontation at a Veterans Affairs clinic in southern Oregon says he is frustrated his son has not received proper care for post-traumatic stress disorder.

Gilbert “Matt” Negrete, an Army veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, is in jail awaiting trial for attempted assault and other crimes after he allegedly pulled a knife during an altercation with clinic staffers in January.

His father says Negrete has recovered from being shot in the chest but is not getting the psychological help he needs.

A spokeswoman for the VA clinic in White City did not return calls seeking comment.

A July 24 trial date has been set.
