JACKSON, Mississippi (WAPT) — Two local organizations partnered together to distribute Thanksgiving meals to the community.

For eight years, Kimberly Rochel Toney and the Change Makers Society have prepared meals for those in need on Thanksgiving Day.

“They’re a lot of families that live in these hotels that don’t actually have homes and can’t really cook what they would love,” Toney said.

This year, Open Heart Youth Outreach took part in the effort as well, helping to stack platters full of turkey, dressing and candied yams at the Best Value Inn off I-55.

“If we really just think about it, we’re all just like or could be one step away from being in the same predicament,” said Monsherrie Williams, founder of Open Heart.

Young adults who are part of the organizations were also present, saying they began serving the community at an early age.

“Everybody needs somebody and everyone doesn’t have a mom or a dad or a warm home to go and tables out here,” Jaliyah Bridges said. “There’s people out here that need people. They need us.”

Toney said it’s important to have young people at the forefront, reminding them to be appreciative of the little things.

“We don’t know what — people when they’ve fallen on hard times — what has happened. So when the young people see that what they have, they can also give back as well looking into their own lives,” Toney said.
