Ridgeview, Redmond HS students make hundreds of bowls to tackle hunger in Redmond through Empty Bowls event

(Update: Adding video, comments from staff, students)

REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Hundreds of handcrafted bowls covered lunch tables at Ridgeview High School for Sunday's Empty Bowls fundraiser.  Ridgeview and Redmond high school students came together for the event, to tackle hunger in the community.

All grades in the schools ceramics classes helped to create the bowls, which were $25 to purchase. People walked up and down the tables, admiring each bowl, and choosing their favorite, which was then filled with soup made by the Ridgeview culinary students.

Ridgeview High School seniors Lucy Stancliff and Noah Prelog shared how the bowl-making went.

Stancliff said, "It's been cool to be able to like, improve our ceramics skills up until this point and be able to help, now that we're at our peak."

Prelog said, "It definitely wasn't pretty to start out with. It was a process, but you get better as you go along. I feel like now we definitely made some cool bowls, and it feels awesome to be able to give those to charity. It feels like a special thing to help out with it."

Ceramics teacher Brian Manselle said it was a positive experience for all involved, "helping students think outside of themselves, and that other people in our world and our community, our cities could use help at certain times in their lives.

"To be able to give their time not only making the bowls and the soup, but here interacting with our community and helping support people that that really need an extra hand in Central Oregon is so valuable, I think."

Half of the proceeds will go to benefit Jericho Road, which supports those experiencing homelessness and in need in the Redmond area.

There was also a silent auction, live music and pottery available at discounted prices.
