Happening Now: Volunteers needed for park and trail projects through October

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — Bend Park and Recreation District is inviting community members to join its Natural Resources and Trails team with upcoming volunteer project days from May to October.

Volunteers are needed to roll up barbed wire, pull weeds, remove trash, close off unofficial trails, and plant native vegetation at several volunteer projects scheduled throughout the summer and early fall. Advanced sign up is strongly encouraged.

The first event is Saturday, May 16, from 9 a.m. to noon at a SE Bend property owned by BPRD. Volunteers will help staff with barbed wire removal and litter clean-up of the future park site.

Tools and materials will be provided by BPRD; however, participants are encouraged to bring work or garden gloves, closed-toe shoes, a refillable water bottle, sunscreen, and clothes appropriate for the weather that day.

Saturday, May 16 – Barbed wire and litter removal
Location: SE Bend park district property. The address will be shared via email to participants prior to the May 16 event.
Time: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Work level: Moderate
Best for: Age 14 and over (under age 16 with adult)

Saturday, June 13 – Trail work
Location: Shevlin Park
Time: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Work level: Moderate to heavy
Best for: Age 14 and over (under age 16 with adult)

Wednesday, June 24 – Trail work
Location: Shevlin Park
Time: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Work level: Moderate to heavy
Best for: Age 14 and over (under age 16 with adult)

Saturday, July 11 – Deschutes River Cleanup
As part of the Upper Deschutes Watershed Council annual river cleanup event, Sign up for this event through Upper Deschutes Watershed Council.

Location: Farewell Bend Park south to the Deschutes River Trail
Time: 9:00 am – 1:00 pm
Work level: Light to moderate
Best for: Age 12 and over (under age 16 with adult)

Wednesday, July 29 – Weed pull and litter clean up
Location: Pine Nursery Park Off Leash Area
Time: 8:00 am – 11:00 am
Work level: Light to moderate
Best for: All ages welcome (under age 16 with adult)

Saturday, August 22 – Trail work
Location: Rockridge Park
Time: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Work level: Moderate to heavy
Best for: Age 14 and over (under age 16 with adult)

Saturday, October 3 – Planting native species
Location: Riley Ranch Nature Reserve – lower canyon area
Time: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Work level: Moderate to heavy
Best for: Age 12 and over (under age 16 with adult)
