BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- With less than a week until Christmas, The Salvation Army says it's $37,000 away from reaching their Red Kettle goal in Central Oregon.

“Our most recent numbers show us about $37,000 away from our goal. When you donate money in a Red Kettle, that money stays in your community to help your neighbors in need” says Captain Michael Johnson, corps officer at The Salvation Army Bend Corps.

Community members can help The Salvation Army by giving at a Red Kettle to help them reach their goal of $120,000.

“We are here for the community and will continue to help our community to the best of our capacity and our means," Johnson said. "We can do more with the community’s help, so please throw a couple extra coins or dollars into the next kettle you see.  Your spare change can literally change someone’s life when you donate to The Salvation Army.”

Funds raised during the Kettle Season provides critical support for over 15,000 people in Central Oregon, through our client choice food pantry, youth programs, and more.

Kettles can be found at Fred Meyer, Walmart, Bimart, Albertsons, Grocery Outlet, and Walgreens throughout Bend, Redmond and La Pine, until December 24th.

About the Red Kettle Campaign

From its humble origin as a fundraiser started by a Salvation Army captain in San Francisco in 1891, the Red Kettle Campaign has grown into one of the most recognizable and important charitable campaigns in the United States. As part of the campaign, more than 25,000 Salvation Army workers and volunteers spread throughout the country to ring bells and solicit spare change donations to the iconic red kettles from holiday shoppers.  Last year, money raised helped The Salvation Army provide food, clothing, toys and other assistance to 80,000 people in need in the Portland Metro area.
