C.O Sportsmen’s Show among many event cancellations due to COVID-19 outbreak

We have a running list; please send entries to stories@ktvz.com

REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Heeding Oregon Gov. Kate Brown's directive banning large public gatherings of more than 250 persons through April 8, the Central Oregon Sportsmen's Show decided to cancel its event that was set to begin Thursday, one of many organizations canceling or delaying planned events and making other changes to curb COVID-19's spread.

The Sportsmen's Show is considered a kick-off event for the upcoming spring season, where attendees can take advantage of discounted prices. Kelley Parsons, a sales manager at Blue Dog RV, said the event is a way for customers to be introduced to new items.

“The show is very important to us," Parsons said. "Like I said, it’s a kick-off to the season and gives everyone a chance to get out and see what’s going on.”

The Sportsmen's Show expected a $100,000 gate at the event on Friday. But, due to the event's cancellation, there's no money to be made for event organizers or vendors.

Vendors paid $800 for 10-by-10-foot both at the show. There's no word on whether vendors will be refunded for their both fees.

Kevin Miller with All Seasons RV and Marine said the cancellation may be a little overboard.

“I wish people would kind of calm down a little bit, use common sense and wash your hands and just enjoy life,” Miller said.

Blue Dog RV and All Seasons RV and Marine said they both plan to honor discounted show prices at their Bend location for the near future.

Here's the Sportsmen's Show statement in full (and a running list of other event postponements or cancellations - please send us notifications at stories@ktvz.com.):

"The Central Oregon Sportsmen’s Show has made the difficult decision to cancel the show based on the mandate just issued from Governor Kate Brown.  It’s in the best interest of the community, our exhibitors and our staff.  This decision is particularly difficult given our 10 months of preparation, high hopes to deliver our best show ever and the effort of our hundreds of exhibitors and local businesses whose business will be impacted by this decision.  This situation has developed rapidly, we have been watching it closely to understand the risk to all-involved and ultimately that risk is too severe for us to open the show.

"This is the first time we’ve cancelled or closed a show in our 80 years of business.  Recent events associated with the coronavirus have developed quickly, as everyone is working to grapple with the reality of this potentially fast-spreading virus and what steps to take based on the information and science available.  In just the last 24 hours, we have gone from taking a number of actions to provide handwashing stations and safety information to ultimately closing the show.  To say this situation has moved fast is an understatement.

"To be clear, O’Loughlin Trade Shows, and the Central Oregon Sportsmen’s Show, will always put the well-being and safety of our attendees, exhibitors and staff first."

Eagle Watch event canceled for 2020

The 25th annual Eagle Watch, an event celebrating Central Oregon’s raptor population, has been canceled to help slow the spread of COVID-19 in Oregon. The event was originally scheduled for March 28 at Round Butte Overlook Park, near Culver.

The decision to cancel the event was based on Gov. Brown’s recent announcement regarding large public gatherings and social distancing.

Todd Honeywell, park manager at The Cove Palisades State Park, says the cancellation decision was difficult but necessary, given event logistics.

“Eagle Watch typically draws a large number of people, and they often share optics like binoculars and telescopes for viewing the raptors,” said Honeywell. “Visitor health and safety is our first priority, so we decided cancelling the event was best for protecting our visitors and slowing the spread of COVID-19.”

Eagle Watch has been held annually in the area since 1995, and is jointly sponsored by Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, Portland General Electric, Crooked River Grassland and Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs.

Maintaining a clean environment is paramount to our operations. We are taking several steps in response to the threat of the COVID-19:

  • In accordance with Bend-La Pine School district policies, field trips are suspended for a minimum of 30 days.
  • We are increasing the frequency of cleaning at the Nature Center, Observatory and Second Tern. Special consideration will be given to ensure the safety of our animal ambassadors, in regard to the virus, as well as using safe and effective cleaning methods.
  • Our hands-on exhibits will be modified or temporarily removed to avoid potential transmission.
  • Programs and classes will be limited to smaller groups to accommodate social distancing.
  • Because we cannot guarantee social distancing, Star Dome planetarium shows will be suspended.
  • We are cleaning our spaces before and after programs and activities as well as before/after/during business hours at the Tern.
  • Hand sanitizer is located throughout SNCO’s campus and Second Tern Thrift Store for our customers, staff and volunteers.
  • Donations of goods will not be accepted at Second Tern due to our inability to effectively clean donations we will suspend acceptance donations of second tern until further notice.
  • We are committed to staff and volunteer awareness and training throughout SNCO and are communicating regularly on best practices for hand washing, cleanliness and sanitation.
  • We encourage everyone to use hand sanitizer upon entering and exiting SNCO or Second Tern Thrift Store. Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth. Stay home if you are not feeling well.

We are closely following the Centers for Disease Control's (CDC) guidelines, guidance from state of Oregon authorities, and other relevant public agencies guidelines, and recommendations on the steps we can take to help prevent the spread of the virus. We kindly ask you to self-assess the risk large gatherings may pose to yourself and others.

Information from the Humane Society of Central Oregon:

With the news about coronavirus (COVID-19) changing rapidly, you may be wondering about the effect on animals and operations at the Humane Society of Central Oregon.

HSCO will remain open as we have animals still in need of homes. While our shelter operations are normal, we are increasing efforts to prevent the spread of any illness — asking staff and volunteers to stay home when they are ill, reducing the number of large groups visiting the shelter, and cleaning and sanitizing surfaces regularly.  We will continue to follow Deschutes County Health Services and the Oregon Health Authority’s recommendations relating to keeping the public safe and healthy.

The human-animal bond is strong.  Remember to make sure pets are wearing proper identification, identifying a friend or family member who can help in case you get sick, and having extra food and supplies, including medications, on hand. These preparations can also be helpful if there is a need to stay in your home for an extended period of time.

There have also been questions about whether pets can get sick from COVID-19 or if they can make us sick. According to the Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization, there is no evidence that companion animals such as cats and dogs have been infected or could spread the virus that causes COVID-19.  So cuddle up and take solace with your four-legged friends.

We are monitoring the situation closely and following the advice from public health officials. When you seek information about the virus, look to credible sources like Deschutes County Health Services and the Oregon Health Authority. I assure you the officials at both of those organizations are committed to keeping the public safe, healthy and informed.

And for those of you on social media, please resist the urge to speculate, share rumors or post misinformation.  All of it makes it harder for the credible sources to cut through the clutter.

The health and well-being of the animals in our care, our volunteers and staff and the communities we serve is always our top priority.

We have an amazing community and will get through this with common sense and patience.

Yours in Service,

Sabrina Slusser, Executive Director

News release from The Giving Plate in Bend:

The Giving Plate would like to update our community on our plans going forward in the midst of the current situation our community and country finds itself in regard to the coronavirus.  Due to Governor Brown’s recent mandate on gatherings over 250, we have decided to postpone our first, large fundraising event, Red Carpet Gala, that was to be held this Saturday, March 14th at Seventh Mountain Resort.

This event was intended to celebrate our ten-year anniversary of feeding our community.  We still plan to have the event, and that new date will be released in the coming weeks.  We want to thank the vendors who were committed to help us with the event for working with us to reschedule.  Thank you to Seventh Mountain Resort, Bowtie Catering, High Street Band & Precious Byrd, and Dashoots Photobooth.  This was a sold-out event, and we appreciate the grace and understanding from our event attendees as we made the tough decision to reschedule.

As of today, The Giving Plate plans to remain open to continue to help the neediest individuals in our community.  Many of our volunteers are retired and over 60 years old, so understandably, we have had many of our regular volunteers suspend their volunteering until further notice.  This leaves us shorthanded.  In order for us to keep up with the need of food relief, which we anticipate will increase if schools have to close, we will need help from our community.  We are looking for volunteers who can help, especially during our Thursday and Friday shifts (10-1 & 1-4).  We also welcome donations to help keep up with the demand for food relief that we are experiencing.

For precautionary and “distancing” measures, starting Friday, March 13th, we will ask guests to sign-in and then wait in their cars or outside for their food boxes to be made.  We will also accept phone “orders” for food boxes during this time, and we will call when the box is completed and ready for pickup.  We will still provide food through our Kid’s Korner program, but we will be handing out pre-made bags of food to cut down on how many children are coming through our small children’s food pantry. In the last two months, we have been averaging over 900 children visiting Kid’s Korner each month, which is a 24% increase over our 2019 average.  There is a growing need for food relief, especially among children.  We will remain committed to our mission of “feeding the hungry today with compassion and hospitality”, and hope to have the necessary support and resources to be able to stay open and serve the neediest in our community through this difficult time.

To learn more about The Giving Plate go to:  www.thegivingplate.org or call 541-797-6883 during our open hours to schedule your food box pickup.

Deschutes Public Library Limits Programs, Increases Digital Collection Amid Coronavirus Concerns

March 12, 2020 (Bend, Oregon) — Deschutes Public Library takes the health and safety of our staff and community seriously. The library continues to monitor recent cases of COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest and has established public health and safety best practices to minimize the spread of communicable disease. The library is committed to doing all it can to protect its customers and staff. In light of recent developments, and the governor’s call to limit public gatherings, Deschutes Public Library will suspend all programming and outreach activities, and cancel public meeting room reservations, beginning Friday, March 13.

The library plans to resume programming and outreach on April 13, but will reassess the status of public health and safety at that time. Programming includes all classes, lectures, story times, and workshops. Library outreach to schools, day care centers and senior living communities is suspended until Monday, April 13.

While public programming is cancelled, many of the library’s programs will be made available via Facebook livestream, and story times will be available on the library’s website. Please refer to the library’s website and Facebook page for a list of livestream and video programs. One-on-one programs, such as Thrive Central Oregon and Lawyer in the Library, will continue.

While all libraries remain open with regular hours (www.deschuteslibrary.org/about/libraries/), Deschutes Public Library also offers a wealth of free online resources that the public can access from home or anywhere they happen to be with an internet connection. This includes eBooks and audio books, streaming movies and television shows, digital magazines and music, information databases, and more. The library is increasing its collection of digital materials, such as eBooks and digital audiobooks, during this time. Visit www.deschuteslibrary.org/books/downloads for more information.

The information below is intended to provide additional guidance and information to staff and community in light of heightened COVID-19 concerns. The library maintains the following general precautions:

  • The library’s cleaning staff will take extra care to disinfect all surfaces regularly; janitorial hours have been extended at all library locations until further notice

·        Disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer are available for customers, staff and volunteers to use in the library; staff will notify janitorial services if soap or sanitizer dispensers need to be refilled

·        Staff will wash their hands with warm soap and water (for 20 seconds) and use hand sanitizer regularly throughout the day, and will avoid touching their faces

·        Staff will be proactive in wiping down their work area, including computer accessories, throughout the day; for those sharing work spaces, staff will wipe down equipment between shifts

·        Staff will wear disposable gloves in areas such as materials processing

During this time, the library asks that if staff or volunteers, or someone in their household, experiences symptoms of the coronavirus—such as fever, cough or shortness of breath—that they do not come to work and that they contact their health care provider for information on next steps. Likewise, the library asks the community to follow the same precautions. For those without a primary care physician, information on free or income-based health services can be found at www.freeclinics.com/cit/or-bend.

The library is currently operating at Level 2 of its public health management plan, which includes the following protocols:

·        All library programs, outreach events and meeting room reservations will be cancelled or rescheduled

·        Cleaning protocols will be reviewed and certain heavy use areas targeted for additional deep cleaning

·        Early learning spaces will be closed to the public

·        Open hours may be reduced, but all employees will be required to report to work when assigned

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) states that COVID-19 does not survive well on surfaces, but is spread most often by small droplets of mucus from the nose and throat. The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus, which is why diligent hand washing and sanitizing are so important. However, in addition to fastidious hand washing, the CDC also recommends the following to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe

The CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask, as the supply of facemasks is crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings. The agency recommends facemasks be worn by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent its spread.

Note from Marvin Thomas of the Notables Swing Band:

Hello all you dancers and corned beef and cabbage lovers out there.

The Bend Parks and Rec has decided that in the interest of the health and safety of all persons it  is best if they cancel tomorrow's (Friday's) St. Patrick's Day Dinner/Dance.

I agree with them completely. But, I did tell them we will be ready for a make-up dinner dance in the future as soon as it makes sense.

The band is disappointed, because we were ready with our green ties and had worked up playing When Irish Eyes Are Smiling.

We will let you all know when our next dance will be.

Thank you for being such faithful fans.
