‘Mind Your Mind C.O.’ effort promotes everyday mental health in difficult times

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- COVID-19 has brought renewed attention to public health, with daily reminders about hand-washing, social distancing and the use of masks. One critical aspect of public health that has received less attention as the pandemic spreads is mental health.

But taking care of our mental health is more important than ever, with increased stress, anxiety, financial uncertainty and social isolation impacting nearly everyone.

Deschutes County Health Services and Central Oregon Health Council have created a mental health awareness campaign called Mind Your Mind Central Oregon for residents in Crook, Deschutes and Jefferson counties.

The goal is to promote everyday mental health awareness, provide resources and encourage open dialogue that reduces the shame and stigma associated with seeking self and professional care.

“Mind Your Mind Central Oregon is working to inspire a culture of support and acceptance around every day mental health awareness in Central Oregon,” said Jessica Jacks, prevention programs supervisor for Deschutes County Health Services.

“Recognizing that mental health challenges are common and normal makes it more comfortable for us to seek the care and resources we need to mind our minds. During uncertain times like these, it’s even more critical that we pay attention to our mental health, so we want to make sure our communities know they have Mind Your Mind Central Oregon as a resource."

Mind Your Mind Central Oregon also aims to increase awareness of the importance of mental health to a person’s overall physical health and wellness, and to reduce the stigma of those seeking help. The campaign includes practical resources that individuals, families, schools, work sites and communities can use.

One example is the ability to connect with a local support group through the National Alliance on Mental Health, which offers free seminars and courses for people experiencing mental health challenges in their families.

Seniors can connect with the mental health community through the Council on Aging in Central Oregon. They also can find events and resources at senior centers throughout Central Oregon, all organized and easy to access on the Mind Your Mind site.

Adults with disabilities experiencing loneliness or depression can call the Friendship Line, a 24 hour service dedicated to emotional and grief support. There are programs for children, from toddlers to teens, and practical programs to develop mindfulness. The campaign also includes resources related to substance abuse, suicide prevention, gambling problems and more.

Mind Your Mind Central Oregon includes providers and health advocates from Crook, Jefferson and Deschutes counties. Learn more at https://mindyourmindco.org/ and follow the Mind Your Mind Central Oregon Facebook page for weekly tips, reminders and resources.
