Prineville’s 24-Hr. ‘Relay For Life’ Concludes

There is no finish line till we have a cure — that’s the battle cry of hundreds of Central Oregonians walking in the annual “Relay For Life” that took place in Prineville this weekend.

The 19th annual event started Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and lasted until Sunday morning at the same time.

During that 24 hours, one member of Prineville’s 20 teams has to be on the track at all times.

Benefiting the American Cancer Society, the event is held in cities coast to coast. Central Oregon has four relays every year — Prineville’s was the fourth this summer, taking over the track at Ward Rhoden Stadium.

The walk is very important to those who have been affected by the disease.

“It’s very heartwarming to see all the community support we get, not only from the people who actually come and walk and stay and keep walking and walking, but the local sponsors that help our event,” said Frances Carter, the Relay For Life Crook County event director.

“By starting a team or walking laps or getting involved, they get to fight back,” said Stefan Myers with the local American Cancer Society. “They get to be a part of the process of finding a cure and helping the American Cancer Society save more lives.”

This years theme is “Seasons Of Hope,” and organizers say the community has really embraced it
