Authorities warn of C.O. canal dangers

Police say every summer, calls increase for people caught swimming in Central Oregon irrigation canals. Not only is it a safety concern, but officials say it’s also illegal — and could even land someone behind bars.

On a hot summer’s day, a quick dip in the canal might be appealing for some. But those who are in charge of the water flow say to keep out.

“Technically, people are trespassing if they use the canal for recreation, or any other purpose,” said Central Oregon Irrigation District Manager Steve Johnson. “It’s really our property.”

If the irrigation district wants police to take action, the suspect could face jail time or fines of up to $500.

“It’s trespassing, and that’s an arrest,” said Bend police Sgt. Ron Taylor. “We could issue a citation in lieu of custody, but it’s still an arrest, where you would have to go to circuit court.”

The water is used for irrigation purposes and provides water to feed High Desert crops.

Every spring, county officials visit nearby elementary schools to go over canal safety with children.

“It does look slow, but it’s difficult to get out,” said Johnson. “There are obstructions in the water that people can’t see. The most recent drowning was several summers ago in Bend.”

Taylor answered the call when a toddler drowned in the water.

“It was obviously very tragic,” said Taylor. “Tragic for the family, and something that no one would ever want. But it just shows that water safety is something that we always need to have on the forefront.”

As summer on the High Desert ramps up, police said they hope parents and children will remember to stay safe and avoid another tragic accident.

Irrigation officials also want to remind pet owners to watch out for your animals around the water. There are pipes on the side of the canals, and several dogs have died over the years when they were sucked below the water.
