Soap Box Derby racers compete in Sisters

KTVZ

Sisters held a Soap Box Derby race for the first time ever this weekend.

Soap Box Derby racing is gravity drag racing, meaning there are no motors in the cars.

The cars are weighed in and have to be equal.

About 75 kids aged 7 to 17 competed in the two-day event, with 19 Sisters-area kids participating for the first time on Saturday.

Kids have two passes down the hill, and the overall best lap time is the winner.

We caught up with one Sisters girl, Mikayla Sadler, who won in the world championship, and asked her why she likes to compete.

“I really like going down the hill,” said Sadler. “I like meeting new people and make new friends.”

The kids who were in the top eight cars earned points and a chance to go to the world championships in Akron, Ohio.

Organizers hope this weekends races will help them get a club going in Central Oregon and also get an official track.

The closest club and registered track is in Salem, which is where Sadler competed before going to Akron.
