Bremont agrees to plea deal in student abuse
Michael Bremont, the former director of the Redmond Proficiency Academy accused of abusing a female student, as well as another student in Linn County more than six years ago, entered conditional guilty pleas to sex abuse and theft charges Tuesday in a deal that apparently will bring a 19-month prison sentence.
Bremont, 39, was arrested in February on 14 charges stemming from a relationship with an RPA student that reportedly began in 2009,when she was 15.
He entered not guilty pleas to all of the charges back in June, but settlement conferences were held this fall, leading to his “Alford pleas” to reduced charges of one count each of second- and third-degree sex abuse.
In an Alford plea, a defendant does not admit guilt, only that the evidence presented is likely to lead to a conviction.
A Deschutes County prosecutor said another possible charge of theft involved school property.
Bremont also is expected to change his plea Nov. 5 in Linn County on a second-degree sex abuse charge He was arrested in June on charges he abused a Linn County high school student, who was 17 at the time. That is expected to lead to a 30-day jail term, concurrent with the 19 months in his Deschutes County sentence.
Bremont entered the new pleas Tuesday before Deschutes County Circuit Judge Michael Sullivan, who allowed him to remain free under electronic monitoring until his sentencing, set for Nov. 30.
He also told Bremont he faces a 19-month prison sentence, followed by five years post-prison supervision. Prosecutors said he would get credit for time served in jail but not for the time free on electronic monitoring.
Court records showed Bremont abused the RPA student starting in October 2009, when she was 15, and ending in February 2010. The documents said the relationship began with flirting and text messages, leading to sexual abuse, at first in his motor home during a school trip.
Bremont has been free on bail and living with family members in West Linn, with electronic monitoring by ankle bracelet.
