Musical brings RHS students together for a cause

Inside the Redmond High School auditorium Thursday night, an unlikely bunch of students took to the stage. They all have different stories to tell. They’re artists, singers, baseball players, golfers and future leaders, performing in “Legally Blonde, the Musical.”

“To have people come and watch it and enjoy it and laugh and feel the emotions that we go through, that we are trying to portray, is really wonderful and really rewarding,” said Hannah Holly who plays ‘Brooke.”

Holly says the group decided early on a portion of the ticket sales would go to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St. Charles.

It’s all part of the “Mr. RHS” pageant at the high school.

“It’s nice to see them walking up and down the hall and seeing them being grateful for one another and knowing each other,” said Dean of Students Marc Horner.

Horner is also the RHS baseball coach and brought many of these students together, not knowing the production they’re doing would give back to him.

“Adrianna is in the NICU, being taken care of by a plethora of incredible nurses and staff,” Horner said Thursday evening.

His newborn daughter, Adrianna, has been there since Feb. 20. Coincidentally, she was born on opening night of the school’s production.

“We ended up getting a picture of Mr. Horner’s brand new baby daughter in the program, which was really exciting.” said Lilli Wagner, who plays “Elle.”

“When you get to see exactly what you’re doing, what you’re raising money for is going to — it’s that picture that’s right there. That’s the point,” Holly said.

“He has helped me with so much stuff that I wanted to help him and give back to him in some way,” senior Tim Messner said. “Even getting me into this, that helped me become a better person, I believe, and I wanted to thank him in that way.”

Horner has been able to inspire hundreds of students throughout his career. But everything he’s paid forward over the years is now catching up, and helping him and his newest family member.

“People don’t care what you do, but why you do it,” Horner said. “To be able to pick up little things like that, that turn into big things, has been nothing short of phenomenal.”
