Humane Society of C.O. reports record reunion rate
The Humane Society of Central Oregon is delighted to report that April 2013 set a record with 89% of stray dogs being reunited with their families.
Fifty-seven of the 64 dogs that wandered away from home and were brought to the Bend shelter were reunited with their owners. For the felines, 37%, or 7 out of 19 stray cats were taken back to the comforts of their home.
Nationally, only 15 to 30% of dogs are returned to their owners and sadly, only about 2-5% for cats.
HSCO’s Community Outreach Manager, Lynne Ouchida, stated that “the return of these animals were assisted by animals wearing identification tags, having microchip implants and owners filing lost reports. These numbers reflect our community’s outstanding efforts to be a responsible pet owner.”
In 2012, the Humane Society of Central Oregon’s average return to owner rate for dogs was 75% and 23% for cats. Reporting lost and found animals to local shelters and having current identification on your pets ensures a quick and safe return. For more information visit www.hsco.org.
