Bend Spay-Neuter gets grant to serve 100 pit bulls

KTVZ

The Bend Spay and Neuter Project said Monday it has been selected to receive a
$7,500 grant from the Humane Society of the United States to provide free spay/neuter, rabies vaccinations and Deschutes County licenses for 100 Pit Bull-type dogs in Central Oregon.

Pit Bull-type dogs are the second most common breed of dog entering the Humane Society of Central Oregon and the most likely to be euthanized in shelters nationwide.

“These dogs get a bad rap, and we want to do all we can to promote them in a positive light. Anyone who has met our mascot dog Sam, who happens to be a very sweet Pit Bull, can see that each dog, no matter what their breed, is an individual,” says BSNP Director Megan Wellinghoff.

By providing free spay/neuter surgery as well as a rabies vaccine and county license, Bend Spay and Neuter Project hopes to not only prevent more accidental litters from being born, but help make it easier for the Humane Society of Central Oregon to return more Pit Bull-type dogs to their owners.

Anyone living in Central Oregon is eligible to take advantage of the SNIP-PIT program. Funding is available for 100 dogs, and appointments will go quickly. Call or email BSNP to schedule an appointment at 541-617-1010 or bendsnip@gmail.com and mention SNIP-PIT.

BSNP provides high quality, affordable spay/neuter and wellness services to at-risk
cats and dogs in Central Oregon in order to create a more humane community. BSNP does not receive any public funding and is not affiliated with the Humane Society of Central Oregon. To donate or volunteer please visit their website at www.bendsnip.org or call 541-617-1010.
