Gunshot sparks SW Redmond standoff; ends peacefully

Officers arriving to talk to a 24-year-old man in a reported “mental crisis” at a southwest Redmond home early Saturday heard a gunshot, prompting call-out of the region’s SWAT and mobile crisis teams. Officers negotiated evacuation of a roommate and took the man into custody nearly two hours later, police said.

Police responded around 4:50 a.m. to the home on SW 17 th Street near Kalama Avenue on the report of someone “in mental crisis,” said Lt. Keith Knight.

Officers contained the area, and as they approached to try to talk to the man, a single gunshot was fired, Knight said, adding that no one was injured.

Police soon learned the second person was in the home and began efforts to evacuate the roommate, for safety reasons, Knight said.

Redmond police requested help from the Central Oregon Emergency Response (CERT) Team and Bend police, as well as assistance from Deschutes County’s Mobile Crisis Assessment Team (MCAT).

With their help, negotiations led to the roommate’s safe evacuation and detention of the man around 6:40 a.m.

The man, whose name was not released, faces charges of first-degree criminal mischief and unlawful use of a weapon.
