Driver injured, cited in NW Redmond crash

An 88-year-old Redmond man was injured and cited Tuesday afternoon after he ran a stop sign at a northwest Redmond intersection and his car was struck by another, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said.

Deputies were dispatched shortly after 2 p.m. to the reported crash at the corner of Northwest Way and Coyner Avenue, assisted at the scene by Redmond Fire Department medics, said sheriff’s Lt. Pau. Garrison.

Northwest way is a north-south road with right of way through the intersection, while east-west Coyner is controlled by a stop sign in each direction, Garrison said.

An investigation found that Richard Mann, 88, was heading east on Coyner at about 40 mph when he failed to stop at the intersection. His car was struck by a southbound 2011 Kia Optima driven by Robert Denny, 61, of Bend, Garrison said, adding that Denny tried to avoid the collision but was unable to do so.

Mann’s car came to rest blocking both lanes on Northwest Way, and the air bags for both cars deployed in the crash, the lieutenant said.

Mann was able to get out on his own and attended to by the fire medics at the scene, Garrison said. He later was taken by family to St. Charles-Redmond, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released. Denny, the other driver, was unhurt, Garrison said.

Mann was cited for failing to obey a traffic control device.

The intersection was closed a short time later for about 20 minutes for a tow truck to remove Mann’s car, Garrison said.
