The construction of a new helicopter landing area, taxi lanes, aircraft parking apron and other facilities will enhance efficiency and improve safety at the Bend Municipal Airport by providing greater separation of helicopter and fixed-wing operations. The proposed project will improve a key transportation and economic development driver for the community.

To learn about the Eastside Helicopter Area Environmental Assessment Project, the Bend Municipal Airport will hold its project kick-off meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 3 at the City of Bend Municipal Court Building, 555 N.E. 15 th , Bend.

The public meeting will provide an opportunity for the community, neighbors, and other project stakeholders to hear about proposed improvements at the Bend Municipal Airport.

The consultant will join representatives from the City, Deschutes County and the Federal Aviation Administration to outline the scope, timeline, opportunities for public comment, and goals for the Environmental Assessment. The Environmental Assessment is the first step towards creating a helicopter-based landing and take-off area.

The Bend Municipal Airport is a High Activity Business and General Aviation airport located on about 415 acres five miles northeast of Bend. More than 200 aircraft are based at the airport, which includes a 5,260 foot single runway and dual, parallel taxiways.

The airport’s history began in the early 1940s, when the country was at war, and a group of Bend citizens deeded a small piece of farmland to establish a landing strip to accommodate the need for aviation training.
