Teen injured in Redmond HS lot ‘horseplay’
A 17-year-old Redmond teen suffered a broken arm and cuts when he fell from the running boards of another teen’s pickup as he drove through the Redmond High parking lot Monday afternoon, police said. The driver was cited for reckless driving in what an officer called a case of “spontaneous horseplay.”
Police and fire medics responded around 2:45 p.m. to the reported injury accident and found the teen lying in the parking lot with injuries, said Lt. Keith Knight.
He was taken by ambulance to St. Charles Redmond for treatment and “is expected to make a full recovery,” Knight said.
Investigators talked to witnesses and the 17-year-old driver of the blue 1997 Ford F-350 pickup.
Knight said the injured boy stepped onto the pickup’s running boards and the other teen, an acquaintance, drove through the parking lot, where the outside rider was unable to hold on.
Redmond police reminded drivers to be careful and have due regard for what is going on around them.
“This incident appears to be an avoidable injury caused by spontaneous horseplay,” Knight said in a news release. “Please do not allow persons to ride on the outside of your vehicle.”
Anyone with more information or who may have witnessed the crash was asked to contact Redmond police at (541) 504-3400 or Deschutes County’s non-emergency dispatchers at (541) 693-6911, and refer to case No. 14-99553.
