Mt. Bachelor Rotary Club helps sister city of Condega
The Mt. Bachelor Rotary Club selected Bend’s Sister-City of Condega, Nicaragua for one of its 2014 World Service projects by providing eighty water filters to families in and around Condega.
“One of the most significant world health challenges is the provision of safe water.” states Don Kliewer, club member and project coordinator. “Rotary International has identified the provision of clean water as one of its top priorities and our club was excited to take action. Each filter is effective for a family’s water needs for a whole day.”
Mt. Bachelor Rotary raised funds and then partnered with Bend Firefighters Association and the on-the-ground non-profit, Emergency Response Services for Latin America (ERSLA) on the project. The filters are made locally and distributed by local firefighters to families living in rural areas around Condega. Delivery of filters serves several long-term purposes including fire inspections of homes, education on fire prevention, mapping GPS coordinates to track the provision of replacement filters and direct emergency response if needed. The project helps builds community and goodwill in Condega and world-wide.
