Wildfire spares Shevlin Park, partly reopened

With the Two Bulls Fire at 70 percent containment, Bend Park & Recreation District officials said Friday they have reopened the northern section of Shevlin Park.

The southern section of the park will remain closed through the weekend, officials said, adding that the park was spared from the wildfire.

The open area of the park is located north of Shevlin Park Road and includes Aspen Hall, the fishing pond, picnicking areas and some foot trails to the north along Tumalo Creek.

The closed section of the park is located south of Shevlin Park Road and west of Shevlin Commons. This area includes Aspen Meadow, Fremont Meadow, the canyon bluff and Tumalo Creek.

“With heavy equipment activity and firefighting personnel working near the southern end of the park, it is important that this portion of the park remain closed for public safety and to allow firefighters to work efficiently,” said Pat Erwert, director of park services.

Park officials anticipate reopening the park’s southern section on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is reopening Tumalo State Park’s day use area to the public beginning Saturday. It was previously closed so that crews fighting the Two Bulls Fire could use it as a staging and resting area.

“Our park visitors’ response has been great and we really appreciate everyone’s understanding during the closure,” said Susan Bethers, park manager.

The campfire and open flame ban affecting Tumalo State Park’s campground is also lifted as of Friday; however, extreme caution should be used throughout the summer. Campfires are only allowed in designated fire rings and should be kept below knee height.
