Sisters Ranger District offers commercial fuelwood permits
Next month, the Sisters Ranger District of the Deschutes National Forest will begin offering commercial permits to purchase fuelwood on the district, officials said Monday.
Fuelwood is as a byproduct of forest management activities such as hazardous fuels reduction, logging slash generated by a timber sale, or roadside debris from clearing forest roads. The collection of fuelwood does not involve the felling of standing dead trees.
Fuelwood is usually considered to be lower-quality firewood, they said. However, it works well as firewood.
Commercial fuelwood permits will be available starting October 11, at the Sisters Ranger District located at the corner of Highway 20 and Pine Street in Sisters.
Permits will be sold from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on a first come, first serve basis on the second Thursday of every month or, if the office is not open on that day permits will be sold the following business day.
Permits will sell for $10 a cord, with a $20 (2 cords) minimum purchase required. Commercial fuelwood permit sales are limited to $300 or 30 cords annually per person.
Volume or cord estimates are not guaranteed for these sales, and purchasers are encouraged to visit the fuelwood units prior to making their permit purchases to make their own volume estimates.
No extensions will be granted and no refunds will be made for load tags not used. Fuelwood permits expire 60 days after the purchase date.
