Victim: SE Bend car vandals likely ‘kids being bored’
One of the car owners hit by by this week’s window-smashing vandals in southeast Bend said Thursday he heard it happen, but didn’t realize what was going on.
Police say the windows on at least 14 cars parked in southeast Bend were shattered with a BB or pellet gun or something similar late Tuesday or early Wednesday.
Domenic Reynolds of Bend described the noise he heard as a loud crack and it was loud enough to wake him up.
“It woke me up, at least. I woke up randomly at 2:30,” Reynolds said.
He didn’t think much of it, and tried to go back to sleep.
“Then I heard another crack, and my window is right there, so I was like, ‘This is weird,’ Reynolds said.
The next morning, residents of certain southeast Bend neighborhoods had a rude awakening.
An officer responded around 6:30 a.m. to the 61000 block of Geary Drive on a report of criminal mischief to a vehicle some time overnight, said Sgt. Ron Taylor.
The officer found the rear window of the car had been shattered. A canvassing of the neighborhood found vehicles with similar damage on Hawes Lane, Parrell Road, Lora Lane, Chase Road and Jacklight Lane, Taylor said.
Reynolds said he didn’t realize the damage until he actually went to his car.
“Unlock the door, opened it, and all of it just crashed. I even got some scratches right there, just from opening the door, because the glass fell,” Reynolds said.
Police don’t have much to go on at this point, but at a quick glance some things are obvious.
“The evidence at the scene suggests it was a BB or pellet type gun,” said Lt. Nick Parker.
Police say they think the vandals were driving because of the widespread damage. But it’s too soon to tell for sure.
“Pretty confident it was done by the same person or persons,” Parker said.
Reynolds also has his suspicions.
“Kids being bored,” Reynolds said.
Police asked anyone with information about the crimes to call the Deschutes County dispatch non-emergency number, 541-693-6911. The likely charge: First-degree criminal mischief.
