KIDS Center grant to fund pilot program
KIDS Center, Central Oregon’s only child abuse intervention center, recently was awarded a $40,610 grant from Meyer Memorial Trust for a new pilot program to support children who have witnessed domestic violence.
The pilot program provides new services for families dealing with child abuse in their homes.
Working with Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) partners – Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office, DHS Child Welfare, Law Enforcement and Saving Grace — KIDS Center now hosts a coordinated team response where a child participates in a child-friendly interview and the adult victim receives information, services and support at KIDS Center within 24 hours of an incident with any minor child witnessing domestic violence between two adults.
Witness to domestic violence is a significant and growing issue in Central Oregon. On average, of the 300+ child abuse evaluations conducted at KIDS Center each year, approximately 30% have witnessed domestic violence. Children who receive services within 24 hours of the incident are far more likely to discuss their experience and receive the help they need.
Meyer Memorial Trust is a private foundation working with and investing in organizations, communities, ideas and efforts that contribute to a flourishing and equitable Oregon. Through their most recent grant cycle, they awarded 33 grants plus a program-related investment, totaling $4.5 million for organizations and initiatives across Oregon and Southwest Washington. KIDS Center was one of the 29 Responsive Grants that were awarded for areas of human services, health, affordable housing, community development, conservation and environment, arts and culture, public affairs and education.
KIDS Center provides: medical evaluations; forensic interviews; family support; and therapy for children who have or may be experiencing abuse in the tri-county area. KIDS Center also provides region-wide prevention and education programs to help adults learn how to keep kids safe from abuse.
